Description
Camellia japonica 20LT is an elegant evergreen shrub prized for its glossy, deep green foliage and spectacular flowers in shades of white, pink, red, or variegated combinations, depending on the variety. Flowering mainly from late winter into spring, it brings beautiful colour to the garden when many other plants are not in bloom. Ideal for shaded borders, woodland-style gardens, containers, screening, and feature planting, Camellia japonica 20LT grows to approximately 2–4m tall and 1.5–3m wide at maturity.
Care Guide
Type: Evergreen flowering shrub with glossy foliage and a naturally dense, upright to rounded growth habit.
Sunlight: Plant in semi-shade or bright filtered light, ideally with gentle morning sun and protection from harsh afternoon sun. Avoid hot, exposed positions, as strong sunlight can scorch the foliage and damage developing flowers.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially while the plant is establishing and during hot, dry weather. Water deeply and regularly, but avoid waterlogged conditions. Mulching around the root zone helps retain moisture and keeps the shallow roots cool.
Soil: Grow in acidic, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or other organic matter. Avoid alkaline soil, which can cause yellowing leaves and poor growth. Use an acid-loving plant fertiliser if needed.
Frost: Frost tolerant once established, although young plants and developing flower buds may benefit from protection against severe frost and cold, drying winds.
Maintenance: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the desired shape and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning unless necessary. Feed with a fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants after flowering and again during the active growing season.
