Description
Zygocactus, now generally classified under Schlumbergera, is a colourful tropical cactus grown for its showy flowers and distinctive flat, segmented stems. Unlike desert cacti, it naturally grows in rainforest environments, so it prefers filtered light, moderate moisture and some humidity rather than hot, dry conditions. Its trailing growth makes it especially attractive in hanging pots or on shelves where the stems can cascade. The most important care point is to avoid both extremes—do not leave it sitting in wet soil, but don’t allow the compost to become completely dry for long periods either.

- Type: Flowering Cactus / Indoor Plant
- Flowers: Produces showy trumpet-shaped flowers, commonly in shades of pink, red, white, mauve or purple. Flowering generally occurs during the cooler months, with the exact timing depending on the type and growing conditions.
- Sunlight: Bright, indirect or filtered light. Avoid strong direct midday sun, which can scorch or discolour the fleshy stems.
- Water: Water when the top layer of soil has dried, then allow excess water to drain completely. It needs more regular watering than a desert cactus, but constantly wet soil can cause root rot. Reduce watering during the cooler period leading up to flowering.
- Soil: Use a porous, well-draining mix suitable for cacti or epiphytic plants. The soil should retain some moisture while allowing excess water to escape quickly.
- Temperature: Prefers 18–20°C during active growth and should be protected from frost and cold draughts. A cooler period in autumn helps encourage flower buds.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to higher humidity than typical desert cacti. It generally benefits from humid indoor conditions, particularly when the air is dry.
- Maintenance: Remove faded flowers and damaged segments as needed. Avoid unnecessary moving or repotting once flower buds have formed, as sudden changes can cause buds to drop.
- Feeding: Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser during active growth, approximately every 4–6 weeks. Reduce or stop feeding during the autumn period when preparing the plant for flowering.
Crucial care tip: For reliable flowering, give Zygocactus bright indirect light followed by cooler nights and long, uninterrupted periods of darkness in autumn. Avoid overwatering and don’t move the plant once flower buds have formed, as this can cause bud drop.
