Description
Fittonia, also known as the Nerve Plant or Mosaic Plant, is a compact tropical houseplant prized for its richly patterned leaves and contrasting veins, which can appear in shades of pink, red, white or green depending on the variety. It naturally grows along the humid forest floor, so it does best in bright, indirect light, consistently moist soil and high humidity. The most important thing to remember is not to let it dry out completely—a thirsty Fittonia will quickly wilt, although it can usually recover after thorough watering.

- Type: Foliage Houseplant
- Flowers: Can produce small, insignificant white flowers, but these are rarely seen and the plant is grown primarily for its colourful foliage.
- Sunlight: Bright, indirect or filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Lower light may also cause the vibrant leaf colours to become less pronounced.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the surface begins to feel slightly dry and don’t allow the plant to remain dry for long periods. If the leaves droop dramatically, this is usually a sign it needs water.
- Soil: Use a moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix. The soil should hold enough moisture for the Fittonia without becoming soggy.
- Temperature: Prefers warm conditions above 17°C, ideally in a stable indoor environment. Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
- Humidity: High humidity is essential. Bathrooms, kitchens and terrariums are excellent locations. In drier rooms, use a humidifier or place the pot on a tray of damp pebbles.
- Maintenance: Trim back overly long or leggy stems to encourage a fuller, more compact plant. Remove damaged leaves and keep the plant away from drying heat sources such as radiators.
- Feeding: Fittonia is not a heavy feeder. Apply a half-strength general-purpose or houseplant fertiliser approximately every 2–3 months during active growth.
Crucial care tip: Never let Fittonia dry out completely for extended periods. Consistent moisture and high humidity are the two biggest factors in keeping it looking healthy and preventing repeated wilting.
