Description

Davallia Bullata, commonly known as the Rabbit’s Foot Fern, is a distinctive fern with delicate, finely divided green fronds and unusual furry rhizomes that creep across the surface of the soil and over the edge of the pot. These rhizomes are a natural feature of the plant and should not be buried, making it particularly attractive in hanging baskets and decorative containers. It prefers bright, indirect light, good humidity and an open, fast-draining growing medium. Unlike many ferns, it should not be kept constantly wet—the compost should be allowed to become almost dry before a thorough watering.

• Type: Foliage Houseplant / Epiphytic Fern
• Flowers: Does not produce flowers. It is grown for its delicate fronds and distinctive furry rhizomes.
• Sunlight: Bright, indirect or filtered light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
• Water: Allow the growing medium to become almost dry before watering thoroughly. Allow excess water to drain completely and avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, as prolonged dampness can cause root problems.
• Soil: Use a loose, open and fast-draining mix containing materials such as bark, moss and perlite. The rhizomes should remain on top of the soil rather than being buried.
• Temperature: Prefers warm indoor conditions, ideally above 16°C, and should be protected from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
• Humidity: High humidity is important for keeping the fronds lush and preventing brown, dry foliage. A humidifier, pebble tray or naturally humid bathroom can help.
• Maintenance: Remove brown or damaged fronds at the base. Allow the furry rhizomes to grow freely over the soil surface and pot edge—do not cut or bury healthy rhizomes, as they are an important part of the plant.
• Feeding: Feed with a diluted orchid or balanced liquid fertiliser from spring through autumn, following the product instructions.

Crucial care tip: Don’t treat Davallia Bullata like a fern that needs constantly wet soil. Let the growing medium become almost dry before watering, while keeping the surrounding air humid. Most importantly, never bury its furry rhizomes.
