Description
Bring a striking, cool-toned contrast to your landscape with the grey-foliaged form of Cotyledon orbiculata, traditionally known as the Grey Plakkie. This exceptionally hardy, indigenous succulent forms a structural mound of large, thick, paddle-shaped leaves coated in a heavy layer of powdery white-grey chalk (farina), which acts as a natural sunblock. Each leaf is beautifully outlined with a sharp, glowing red margin. In winter, it sends up tall, sturdy stems topped with large, drooping clusters of bell-shaped coral-orange to red flowers that are an absolute magnet for local sunbirds.
-
Maximum Size: Reaches a mature height and spread of roughly 60cm to 1m, creating a substantial, eye-catching shrub over time.
-
Care Tips: Thrives in a full sun position, which intensifies the red margins and maintains the dense, powdery grey foliage. Highly drought-resistant and water-wise—water deeply but infrequently, allowing the well-draining soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid watering directly over the leaves to preserve the beautiful chalky coating.
