Description
Chaenomeles White (Flowering Quince) 10LT is a deciduous flowering shrub prized for its elegant white blooms that appear in late winter to early spring, often before the leaves emerge. The crisp white flowers brighten the garden during the cooler months while attracting bees and other beneficial pollinators. Its dense, thorny growth habit makes it an excellent choice for informal hedges, borders, feature planting, and cottage gardens. It typically grows 1.5–3m tall and 1.5–2.5m wide, depending on growing conditions and pruning.
Care Guide
Type: Deciduous Flowering Shrub
Sunlight: Thrives in Full Sun to Semi-Shade. Plant in a sunny position for the best flowering display.
Water: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply during prolonged dry periods, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts well to a variety of soil types. Enrich the soil with compost before planting to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.
Frost: Frost Hardy. Tolerates light to heavy frost and performs well in most South African climates.
Maintenance: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove old or overcrowded branches. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage vigorous growth and prolific flowering.
