Description
Chaenomeles Red (Flowering Quince) 10LT is a deciduous flowering shrub admired for its brilliant red blooms that appear in late winter to early spring, often before the leaves emerge. Its vibrant display provides a welcome splash of colour at the end of winter and attracts bees and other pollinators to the garden. With its dense, thorny branches, Flowering Quince is ideal for informal hedges, borders, feature planting, and cottage gardens. It typically grows 1.5–3m tall and 1.5–2.5m wide, depending on growing conditions and pruning.
Care Guide
Type: Deciduous Flowering Shrub
Sunlight: Thrives in Full Sun to Semi-Shade. The best flowering occurs when planted in a sunny position.
Water: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply during prolonged dry periods, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts well to a variety of soil types. Incorporating compost into the soil will encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Frost: Frost Hardy. Tolerates light to heavy frost and performs well in most South African climates.
Maintenance: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove old or overcrowded branches. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and prolific flowering.
